I’m Finally Telling The Truth

bull headI’ve been telling lies for a while.  Yep, my blog has been the focus of numerous lies over the years, but today, for a change, I’m going to tell the truth.

You see, for years, I’ve been telling you about the bull.  I built my business around it, literally.  But the truth is, as I’ve grown my business, I’ve learned that I have bull, too!  And, you know what my biggest bull is?  My bull!

Yup, I’ve been putting my bull front and center – at Sponsorship tables, on my website, on my marketing materials….and I don’t need to tell you all the gory details, but it is that very same bull that lost me more business than I’d like to admit.

The good news is, I still grew my business in leaps and bounds.

I’m not telling you this because I’m writing a tell-all expose, I’m telling you this because I want to change your life.

I’m about to launch a whole new brand, and it came about because I realized that I needed to model something really important for all of you.  I am stepping in to a bigger version of me so I can show you how to do the same thing for yourself.

I started BullBusting as a way to both have fun helping people bust their bull, but also because it was a fun, and creative way to combine my love of cows and bulls into what became an attention-getting logo and website. As I move over to my new brand, I realize that the bull I’ve been leading with has actually been about me and drawing attention, when in fact, I’m in business for you.

bullI still love cows and bulls, that won’t change!  (Nor will my personality.) But, listening to many of my clients, and those that I didn’t get, my clients don’t work with me because of my cute bulls, they work with me because of my expertise.  And, frankly, all these cartoony bulls give the impression that I’m fun and silly (true!), but they don’t showcase my expertise and sophistication one bit.  In fact, because they actually have made people doubt my expertise, I’ve had to work harder to overcome that perception, and realized it was time to lead with my own brilliance, not the bull.

And that’s the theme I’m stepping in to – leading with your brilliance.  So, I realized, it was time to let my own brilliance lead the way, instead of my bull, just like I hope each of my clients learns to do.

What I learned is:

  • You gotta start someplace and go with it!  I am so glad I started with my bulls – they were the perfect starting place for me, I don’t regret that one bit.
  • A brand is about more than a picture.  As I began to grow my business, and see the disconnect between my expertise and my branding, I didn’t run and change everything.  Instead, I listened.  I listened to feedback from my clients, and to the words and actions of the people that did not become my clients.  I learned a lot.  I let myself learn because that helped me understand what my value is, who it’s for, and to get a lot clearer in my messaging.  It got more and more clear that the picture of a bull did not represent the entire experience of working with me, and since my true value is in helping my clients access what’s beyond their bull, it also didn’t clearly represent what they would gain from working with me.

And so, it’s time for me to step up to a bigger game, so that I can challenge you to do the same in your business.  Let me tell you, it was a very emotional decision to remove my bulls from my branding.  Despite all the learning, they have been with me for a long time, and I had to fight the feeling that I was somehow deserting a part of myself.  (If you’ve ever moved on to a new focus in your own business, you will know what I mean!)

However, since I made that decision, amazing things have been happening.  You see, my new mission is to help everyone lead their business with their brilliance.  Leading with my own brilliance, I was almost crushed during a speaking gig by a room full of people wanting to take me up on my offer!

WSR2I have spent every spare moment talking to people in the past 6 weeks who want to bust their bull and boost their brilliance, and I’ve been closing clients at a much higher rate than ever before.

This is what I want for you, and I’m so excited about what’s still yet to come.
